Summary:
Aeration is important for the
garden as well as the lawn, but the techniques for garden
aeration are different than for lawns, and the subject for
another column.

An aerator is the equipment that performs the work and it's a
machine every gardener and landscape maintenance contractor
should own. A better solution
would be frequent aeration and, depending upon the composition
of the soil, the application of lawn and garden amendments such
as peat, sand, or gypsum.

The benefits of aeration are an increase in the:

- growth rate of the grass thus an improvement in its ability
to withstand and recover from pedestrian use
- ability of water and fertilizer to penetrate to the grass
roots soil's absorption rate from irrigation
- root growth activity contributing to the strength and health
of the grass
- ability of bacteria present in the soil to break down and
decompose the thatch layer thus increasing the soils ability to
hold sufficient amounts of moisture between waterings
- grass's ability to withstand low water situations and heat
stress

Aeration is a technique best applied in late summer or early
fall for cool season grasses and in the spring for warm season
grasses.

Aerate, in the context of landscape and grounds maintenance,
means 'to supply the soil with air'. It is a contractor
technique to aid in maintaining and improving lawns. airing
improves the lawn appearance, usability, and it's talent to
absorb water from irrigation. fumigation is important for the
garden as well as the lawn, but the techniques for garden
aeration are different than for lawns, and the subject for
another column.

An blower is the equipment that performs the work and it's a
machine every gardener and landscape maintenance contractor
should own. If you perform lawn maintenance or renovate lawns
you need an aerator. ventilation is a standard component of any
grounds maintenance program. For seasonal work you can rent the
equipment. If you have a larger customer base you should
consider computation an blower to your contractor equipment.
Landscape companies will generally find it more profitable to
own the equipment instead of renting.

First let's discuss the need for distillation and the benefits of
a regular air conditioning program in landscape maintenance.

Grass roots need air as well as water and fertilizer. The grass
can truly poison itself as a result of the various bromide
processes that occur in the individual grass plants if the
grass roots do not have enough air. Soil that lacks sufficient
air can result in; slow growth in the dressed up grass, excess
irrigation runoff due to poor permeability, shallow root
systems, and a lawn that's highly susceptible to insects,
disease, and heat damage.

Soil consolidation is the most typical example of soil deficient in
air. The growth habits of grass in congested soil are shallow
root development, a substantial decrease in the number of grass
plants per square foot, and an inability to properly use
applied fertilizers.

Soil bottleneck in lawns is executed primarily by pedestrian
traffic, whether it is lineage playing in a playground or
people taking shortcuts against a lawn. Stopping the use of the
affected lawns is generally impractical. A success solution
would be frequent fumigation and, depending upon the composition
of the soil, the employ of lawn and garden amendments such
as peat, sand, or gypsum.

The benefits of airing are an increase in the:

- growth rate of the grass thus an improvement in its competence
to withstand and recover from pedestrian use
- technique of water and fertilizer to penetrate to the grass
roots soil's entanglement rate from irrigation
- root growth moves contributing to the strength and health
of the grass
- condition of microbe present in the soil to look-in down and
decompose the thatch layer thus increasing the soils capital to
hold sufficient amounts of moisture midst waterings
- grass's horsemanship to withstand low water situations and heat
stress

Aeration is a technique best used in late summer or early
fall for cool season grasses and in the spring for warm season
grasses. This can also be a good time to overseed and topdress/
amend the aerated lawn. One drawback to sublimation is that it
increases the probability of weed infestation thus it can come to be
important to include pre-emergent and post-emergent weed control
measures. In association to soul of service to the lawn, these
services are an add-on profit center for the landscape
maintenance contractor. distillation services are also often offered
by garden centers and nursery businesses.

If you have a severely damaged lawn or a lawn area that
undergoes heavy and frequent use you might consider aerating
these areas several times throughout the year. Remember,
aeration does damage the grass, so reek 'lightly' by using a
slightly wider tine spacing or only one pass.

An that pulls plugs is more effective than one that
simply pokes holes. An fan that pokes holes can further
compact the soil. Soil agglomeration decrease the procurable air
to the grass roots and causes excess irrigation run off. Either
remove the plugs or mortal wound them up (use a mulching lawn mower or
close the centre carousel on a standard mower). continually cover up any
amendment immediately to secure maximum penetration of the
amendments into the soil. The holes have a tendency to hobbling
especially if pedestrian traffic is difficult to keep off.

Contractor equipment varies from dedicated aerators that pull
plugs to rototiller add-ons that simply poke holes. As
discussed, pulling plugs is better. You will also find the
dedicated ventilator to be easier and more efficient to use.

Aeration is also a way for many landscape maintenance
contractors, gardeners, and garden centers to make more money.
Most offer the service to their customers as an ulterior
service. Pricing and costs will vary. Some placement by the
square foot, others by the job. The middle-of-the-road price in Southern
California is far and wide $45.00 per 1,000 square feet for owner
occupied single family residences. Other large landscape
maintenance contractors offer distillation as part of the
contracted service, especially for large residential
communities where the single billing cost for steaming could
be prohibitive. They take account of the cost of aerating and divide
the result by the term of the contract (usually one year, 12
months) thus surcharge the customer a portion (1/12th) of the
total cost each month. This makes the service affordable to the
homeowner positive transference or property management gossip and brings
in more money to the contractor. The same technique could also
be used by smaller lawn maintenance and gardening companies.

Aeration should be part of your grounds maintenance and
irrigation service. Its an inexpensive way to improve your
customers lawns and make more money. It also makes it easier to
get those yearly increases in fees and keep customers longer.
Happy customers pay much finer than dissatisfied customers.
Aerating really can make a big difference in the fraud of
your customer's lawns! Competition in the Green Industry is
strong and extra services like smoking will help to put you out
in front of your competitors.

I have just finished counselling with a client who was depressed. She is a young mum and initially she was in a very low mood. She hadn't experienced talk therapy before but her friends were pushing her to do something about how miserable she felt.
We talked about her life: the husband that loves her, her 7 month old daughter who she finds difficult to enjoy, her house, her friends and her relatives. About session three, I was wondering where the depression was coming from - her circumstances seemed good, she was healthy and she had several close relationships.

Then we started to talk about when the depression had started - just after her daughter's birth. She mentioned in a 'give away comment', her mother had come to see her then for the first time in 2 years. Well apparently her mum and dad had separated when she was 13 years, had gone off with their own lovers and in the intervening 10 years, my client had seen them separately, irregularly.
Then we started to unfold her memories of being left "in the family home" with her elder sisters (18 and 21 years), being expected to get herself up every day and out to school, feeding herself from whatever food was available in the kitchen, with her sisters at home only when they weren't at work or with boy-friends.

Apparently some days she bunked off school and sat on a wall near the shopping precinct, watching people pass, knowing that no one cared what she did or where she went.
So here was the root of her depression: my client had given up a lively job in a busy office when her baby was due, she was now stuck in her house with a new child and her husband was working long hours to support the three of them - for much of her day, no one cared what she did or where she went.
My client actually broke into tears as she uttered this phrase - no one cared what she did or where she went.

It has taken another six sessions to tease out all her pain and to counter the thoughts that were feeding it - what had she done to be discarded by her mum and dad, how was she going to cope with the world without her parents to love her, and how could she find someone to care about her?
It was easy for my client to project these thoughts into her new daughter's life: what would prevent her from abandoning her daughter on a shopping trip, why couldn't she feel any love for her daughter or her husband, and would anyone care if she went away?

Happily we have now worked through my client's difficult teenage years. She has recognised that her mum and dad were poor parents - so besotted with their own affairs that they hoped the other was doing the parenting and not realising that neither was. She knows she can make her own parenting different - she can choose to stay married to her husband, she can choose to love and cherish her child (or children, later) and in caring for her family, she can enjoy how much they care for her. A tipping point in my client's recovery was when she noticed how much joy her daughter has seeing her after an absence of a couple of minutes. Another important factor was becoming aware that her husband was always glad to see her, to hold her and to cherish her.

So now the depression is lifted. I don't say that it is gone forever because I cannot tell what the future will bring to my client. However, for now, she knows how to manage and chase away those low feelings: to see how her daughter and husband love her.

So now my client's first question to me 'Why am I feeling depressed?' is answered by "No one cared what you did or where you went" and we have found the antidote - 'They do now".
